Hansjörg is the Programme Director Lighting Design at Rose Bruford College. He has been working as a professional lighting designer since 1998, and joined the college in 2008. Unusually for a lighting designer, Hansjörg's professional practice spans both live performance and the built environment. This has grown out of his studies on the BA Drama and Theatre Arts at Goldsmiths College (1993-96), and the MSc Built Environment (Light and Lighting) at the Bartlett School, University College London (2001-02).
Through his design practice, Hansjörg has established extensive links across the lighting industries in the UK, allowing him to work closely with industry partners on the research and development of new lighting technologies and applications. He also works as a lighting consultant, advising on the best use of light to improve well-being in the workplace. This consultancy work aims to challenge the established practice of architect-led new builds, and encourages the use of contextual research and collaboration to create better environments.
In his work as a lighting designer for live performance, Hansjörg regularly collaborates with some of the leading independent theatre companies in the UK: the Clod Ensemble, Fevered Sleep, and Sound&Fury. All work created by these companies is completely original and often groundbreaking. Each new project is informed by an extensive period of research and development, and the final productions are usually connected to wider forms of dissemination and discussion. Light is at the heart of all these companies productions, and therefore his involvement as lighting designer in the research is essential and extensive.
All of Hansjörg's design work is created collaboratively, and often opens up new applications of lighting technology and design, thereby contributing to a continued re-evaluation of the role light can play in performance and in the build environment. All this work is channelled back into Hansjörg's teaching and research work at Rose Bruford College on the BA (Hons) Lighting Design. Hansjörg also regularly gives papers at a range of relevant Symposia, and has started to publish on the subject of light in performance.
